Red Clocks and the Modern Metropolis: Municipal Housing in Red Vienna (1919–1934) as
a Counter-Hegemonic Politics of Time

Since the onset of modern urbanisation, significant shifts in the synchronisation of living and working have
challenged daily rhythms and temporal patterns of urban life. These temporal transformations, however,
have not unfolded without conflict. In this talk, I trace how time in the modern metropolis became a
contested resource and propose a re-reading of Red Vienna’s municipal housing programme as a
counter-hegemonic politics of time.
